Perfect First Car for Your Teen

When it comes to your teenager’s first car, there are a few things that every parent considers—safety and reliability. Your 16-year-old driver doesn’t need a car with all the bells and whistles. What teenager needs a spaceship to take to school?

We went to U.S. News’ used car rankings and found the following makes and models to be the best for your teens to take on the road. Please note that we focused on just mid-sized and full-size models as they are generally the safest.

 FORD FUSION

The Ford Fusion was given an overall score of 9.2/10 on the U.S. News scorecard. Ranked as one of the best overall vehicles, you can’t go wrong putting your teen behind the wheel of a Fusion. The roomy cabin and ample trunk space makes it perfect for carrying sports equipment or other bulky extracurricular gear. Its high reliability and safety scores also make it an ideal car for your graduating high school student to take it off to college as well.

For a more fuel-efficient option, you might want to consider the Ford Fusion Hybrid. Not only will your teen be safer, so will the environment!

CHEVY MALIBU

Scoring an overall rating of 9.3 out of 10 comes our next pick—the Chevy Malibu. The Malibu has been a long-time favorite of critics because of the driver-centric interior and balanced handling. With these features, you can rest assured that your teen will be more focused on the road than what is happening in the car. That is, unless the car is full of other teens. Then we can’t control those types of distractions. While we suggest the 2012 model as one to focus on, it did really poorly in terms of fuel economy. Perhaps other model years, like the 2013-2016, would be better suited for the more eco-friendly individual.

HONDA ACCORD

Does it come as any surprise that the vehicle to score a perfect 10 out of 10 was the Honda Accord? Having been the recipient of many prestigious accolades over the years, there is no question why this vehicle is at the top of the list.

Even less surprising is the fact that the Accord is one of the most fun-to-drive cars in its class. Due in part to its excellent handling and swift feel, this midsize sedan will have your teen zipping from school to practice to music lessons with ease (safely, of course). We highly recommend the 2012-2016 model years.

FORD TAURUS

With a score of 9.3 out of 10, the Ford Taurus is the ideal large sedan for teens who need to haul the majority of the marching band with all their instruments. While most teens don’t necessarily like to feel like they are driving a boat, at least they will have all the room in the world for themselves and all their friends. The more the merrier, right?

With a V-6 engine, the Taurus checks in with 263 horsepower, and won’t get pushed around as easily as similar vehicles in its class. Check out model years 2011-2015.

BUICK LACROSSE

We all knew that one kid who drove a Buick in high school. And for good reason! Buicks are some of the safest and smoothest cars on the road. Checking in at an impressive 9.7 out of 10, the Buick LaCrosse takes the cake.

It’s a big and comfortable car that will do just fine for your teen. Most base models come with a four-cylinder engine, which has more than enough power for a teen on the go. We suggest finding a model from 2011-2015.

TOYOTA AVALON

Can you go wrong with a Toyota? Not usually. While most would expect to see a Corolla or Camry as one of the best to give your teen driver, our focus is on safety for a great price. That said, the Avalon is a clear choice.

With a score of 9.7 out of 10, the Toyota Avalon is another spacious and comfortable ride with reliability ratings through the roof. Plus, when you look at models starting in 2011, you will be able to find great upgrades, like Bluetooth and USB integration.

With so many options to choose from, it is no surprise why it can be hard to find the perfect ride for your teen. But you don’t need to break the bank. All of these models are available for under $15k in our inventory. Let our sales team at Larry H.
