Shock and Strut Replacement in Boise

Shock and Strut Replacement at Larry H. Miller Used Car Supermarket Boise
What Are Shocks and Struts?
Your car's shocks, or "shock absorbers," help regulate the suspension and keep the ride smooth for you in the cockpit. Shocks are comprised of a rod fed through a coil spring, which is suspended just above the brakes on each wheel.
The strut shares a similar function to the shock in that it dampens the spring's movement and stops excessive bouncing when you hit a bump in the road. Struts even look similar and consist of a rod and piston system with their own coil spring. However, struts also help provide a connection point for the vehicle's steering system and wheels, so they cannot be used interchangeably for a shock absorber.
Why do Shocks and Struts Need to Be Replaced?
Shocks and struts are essential parts of any vehicle and can directly influence the steering, alignment balance, fuel economy, and tire wear.
As your suspension deteriorates, the vehicle will "bottom out" and decrease its distance from the ground, causing undercarriage damage. If either of these parts breaks or wears down, it will greatly impact ride quality and can lead to further mechanical complications over time.
How to Tell it's Time to Replace Shocks and StrutsĀ
- An excessively bouncy ride, even in normal driving conditions
- Excessive swaying/listing to one side- usually a sign of alignment imbalance
- Uneven tire wear
- Suspension "bottoming out" rough roads or backing out of driveway
- Noticeable tire shaking, shimmying, or vibrating when hitting a bump
